The tradition of hospitality that started here at Nor'Wester more than 70 years ago started in a place that looks almost the same as it does today. All the things your grandparents came to see are still right here. Moose. Loons. Deer. Eagles. Wolves. The woods are still unspoiled, the lakes are still clean and cool, the big fish are still biting, and the clear skies dance with northern lights and zillions of stars.
Spring, Summer, & Fall Fun
Head off to any of the numerous nearby trails for hiking, mountain biking, wildlife spotting, birding, and berry picking. Our waterfront is well equipped for your every favorite at-the-lake activity. Take out a boat with a motor and explore Poplar Lake. Fish for walleye, northern, smallmouth bass, and crappie. If you like, check the action at a nearby trout lake. Cool off with some exciting waterskiing. Or, rent a canoe and paddle around Poplar Lake or into the Boundary Waters for a day of paddling and fishing. By the way, kids love the paddleboat, and the rental pontoon is perfect for a group, and a memorable sunset ride.
In the fall, explore the back roads, where brilliant reds and yellows offer picturesque photos to treasure. There's good hunting in these woods, too.
Winter Fun in the Woods
In the winter, you couldn't find a better spot for snowmobiling. The snowmobile trails in the Gunflint area traverse some of the most spectacular woods in this part of the country. We have a vast system of local trails that connect to the state trails - you could ride for days, and you still wouldn't see many other people. But you might see wolves, deer, moose or their tracks. It's a wild place here, and it's easy to get the feeling that you have the place to yourself.
Fishing on Poplar Lake
With Poplar Lake as our backyard, Nor'Wester Lodge offers you comfortable lodging close to the lakeshore - start your fishing on Poplar Lake, or launch your boat into one of the many scenic, clear, remote - and productive - lakes in the surrounding Gunflint Trail area. Most of our cabins have a private dock, so bring your boat, or use one of ours. We have fishing boats with motors, paddleboats, a pontoon boat, and a variety of canoes available for rental. Walleye, lake trout, smallmouth bass, northern - it's always a good day spent fishing at Nor'Wester Lodge.
You Need to Relax!
Yes that's right, you need to relax! If you'd welcome a place where the phone doesn't ring, and the only thing you need to dress for is the weather, and the biggest road has two lanes…this is it. And when you start to call it "daytime" and "nighttime" instead of naming hours and minutes, you're getting there. Most folks say that it happens on the third day - so plan to stay for a few. If you've been here before, you know all about that. If you're new, prepare to be amazed, delighted, rewarded, and relaxed. Really Relaxed.
